Build Your Own Book Cover

These days, It’s quite common to supply elements of a cover design that can
be moulded by the Art Director, instead of handing in a completely finished
piece of work. The recent Floors design illustrates this – skip to the third
segment and you can see the exploded view. All the individual objects had
their own layer so Steve Wells (the Art Director) could push them around to
see what worked best with the type.
The earlier roughs reveal there was a vague idea of how it might come
together, although the robot was a late entry (certainly a more interesting
alternative to duck-shaped shrubbery).
This is generally a risky way of conducting one’s illustrative endeavours,
but on this occasion I was happy with the outcome.

Spring Look Out

I managed to get this done in between professional engagements; it was
sketched a month ago and completed very quickly this week (maybe too
quickly). The perching rock looks more square in real life, but I cheekily
plumped it up to give it an egg-like quality (it’s all about Spring, you
see). Taras the lurcher dog appears as is.
